What is the best go-to vegetable ever?
After years of discussion, this needs a definitive answer that does not concern itself with individual taste. Just listing of vegetables.

The answer is clearly, the carrot.

Wholesome versatility, from fresh juices to robust roasts, to sweet cakes to decoration of fictitious snowmen that post-Greta TRUTHS have rendered but a dream. And knob gags.

As an added bonus, carrots allow the billionth WHO mention of Jethro Tull, the man not the bande of wizened mead-reeking trampes.

Thinking about it, in some Latin languages their name comes the original idea of "colourful" but I think that came through "spice" or maybe "spicy" first.

pimiento from pigmentum

Chilli and capiscum are names for the same thing. They have just been bred less spicy generally. For English speakers they were spicy like pepper.
And certain areas picked up one names and went with it. Like zucchini or courgette or the others I mentioned.

Aubergine and cilantro are just the French/Italian names of those vegetables. But capsicums don't really have a spicy taste (unless you include things like the offspirng of a capsicum and a chilli)... so why pepper?

I guess more to the point, most peppers were spicy like pepper.

Chili is from the native word.

You lot are fancy and use the Latin.

Why are eggplants called aubergines?

Or coriander cilantro?

More seriously, like pineapple, (sweet) corn etc. People attached a name of something they knew often to try and sell it back home.

Re: What is the best go-to vegetable ever?
The holy trinity is a Cajun thing - onion, celery, green pepper.

The French original as mentioned has carrot instead of green pepper is sadly just called mirepoix.

Soffrito/soffritto is similar in other Mediterranean cuisines but tomato and garlic tend to replace the other things bar onions.

Not one for sweet potato fries, but there are nice savoury things you do them and black beans especially. Tacos with sweet potato, black beans, red pepper, lime and queso fresco or even a strong feta are great.

But sweet potato and pecan pie, is probably the best use. I will be having it the one and only time this year in two days.

I would like some carrot cake as well but that would be over doing it and we have no one to share with this year.

I see where you are coming from but the holy trinity (according to the French who know a thing or two about grub) is onion, carrots and celery.

I've never been a massive fan of celery but my cooking tastes better with those three ingredients so in it goes.

Sweet potato and yam, couldn't agree more. It's like someone took chunky cut chips and thought a spoonful of sugar would make a better condiment than salt and vinegar. Madness.

The TRINITY is onion, tomato and celery.

Potato is SALT OF THE EARTH.

Yam and sweet potato is ABOMINATION.

Why is beetroot so badly affected by pickling?

The freshly cooked stuff is great, the pickled stuff is close to the bottom of the list of things I eat.
